Robert Blake was born in Bridgwater and became its MP in 1640. At the beginning of the Civil War he joined the Parliamentary army and quickly emerged as an inspiring leader. In 1644_1645 he achieved national fame for his successful defence of Taunton against three Royalist sieges. Taunton Castle was his headquarters. Blake later became one of the greatest English admirals.
