The Taunton Vale Hunt commissioned this portrait of James Scarlett as a mark of respect. James Scarlett started his career as a traveller in wine and spirits. He married Jane an inn-keeping heiress before 1847 and by 1861 they were running the Nags Head pub in North Street. On his death in 1892 his effects were valued at £2085 2s 7d.
