Painting of an unidentified man

Description
When this portrait was given to the Museum in 1975 it was believed to be of Sir Benjamin Hammet (1737-1800), MP for Taunton. However, the style suggests that it was painted by 1750 at the latest. As Hammet was only 13 in 1750, this identification seems unlikely. We can tell from the manĂªs clothing that he was a clergyman and, in time, we may be able to rediscover his identity.
