Carving entitled 'Family I'

Description
Ernst Blensdorf carved Family I in the studio of his family home •Gladenê (Norwegian for •joyê) in Bruton. Positive images of families recurred in his work at this time. The wood is an offcut of Somerset elm from a local sawmill. Originally from Schleswig in north Germany, he had been forced to flee the Nazi regime in 1933 after becoming one of the first German artists to be branded •degenerateê.
